The day after the Blue Angel Orchestra gig, the were a number of
Witchwooders left in the small seaside town of Deal - all relatively
sober, so it was decided to meet on the pier for a musical
interlude.

"A really very very good gig indeed and a nice weekend down by
the sea to boot. Other highlights of which included:
late night drinkies with all and sundry at a local hostelry
(thanks Chris); a hearty breakfast the next morning;
meet at the pier to video us all singing along to Geoff
Alexander’s version of “Lay Down” (defeated because we didn’t
have anything loud enough to play it back on; carry on
regardless with a rather ragged version of Lay Down with Les and
I playing guitars; reprise of same on the shingle beach;
followed by an “energetic” version of “Jesus” with Paul Brazier
taking lead vocals, then Sunday lunch on the front.
I posted the following:
"We eventually left the others to it at the Hoy (pub) at about
2.30am,and got to bed about 3.30am.
Mike and I spent today back at Deal by 11am with Dick, Lindsay,
Alison, Paul, Nigel, Les and Sue. We ended up filming ourselves
all being incredibly silly on Deal pier and beach, larking about
and singing along to Strawbs songs played on two guitars. See
what you missed by having to go home.....
Just wait until that footage hits YouTube - I think we could have a
surprise Christmas number one on our hands here ( or NOT ! ) The
locals thought we were all either completely mad or some new
religious cult or a mix of both, when they heard our renditions
of Lay Down / Man who called himself Jesus etc
Back at the Hoy just before lunch to find most of the people we
left there last night still there......then off for a very
pleasant Sunday lunch."
Lindsay added:
Great fun! Some very nice
guitar brought vividly to life by highly expressive vocals and
gesticulation, sort of Paul does DC in the style of
Morrissey/Johnny Rotten! Camera-shy chorus girls "added" to
the proceedings too, of course.
I thought the reactions of onlookers on the pier was fascinating
- before heading for the beach we had "the film crew" on one
side of the pier and "the cast" (singing/playing/holding
sparklers) on the other, and it was so funny watching how people
dealt with the situation. Some walked straight through, others
tried to duck apologetically in front of the cameras, some
waited patiently and we even got an audience. (Ok it was
strapped into a buggy and screaming
to go, but it was still an audience!)"
Les Cotton commented:
Haha! That was actually
totally unrehearsed (!) first take...Dick on the famous ex-DC
Ovation, and me on Paul's Dean Key largo, the twin of Dave
Lamberts one, two very loud acoustics....and the inimitable Paul
"Red" Brazier :)
All good fun, the locals were certainly perplexed...
If you want to see us in
action, 4 short videos of events have been posted on Youtube
here:
Dick told us:
"I sent the link to Dave Cousins with a heading "Jesus!!!!" The
response back was simply "Christ!!!"
I think that just about sums it up !
